Learning how to remodel a bathroom isn’t really something that most people can do by reading something online. As informative as the Meticulous Plumbing blog tries to be, there’s only so much information that one can impart in a few hundred words.

Still, there are a few basics that we can cover regarding remodeling a bathroom so you can get your feet wet — without getting your feet wet (from busted pipes and such).

Why Remodel A Bathroom?

There are a lot of reasons to remodel a bathroom.

Perhaps you’re thinking about selling your home. A bathroom remodel can increase your home’s value and make your house attractive to potential buyers.

It may be time to update the plumbing system, so you might as well update the bathroom as well!

Of course, it could just be that the bathroom is hopelessly outdated and out of fashion.

Or maybe it’s time to consider a universal bathroom design.

Whatever the motivation, there are a lot of steps that go into remodeling a bathroom.

There are also a lot of things to consider: shower stalls (and shower pans), the type of bathroom flooring you want (tile flooring, vinyl, stone), plumbing fixtures, light fixtures — even the shower door and towel bars.

In this blog post, we’ll cover some of the most common things that homeowners should consider in the early stages of thinking about a bathroom remodel.

Remodeling A Bathroom

As the experts over at The Spruce write, “Even seasoned DIYers gulp and take a deep breath when considering tackling a bathroom remodeling job.”

That’s because, in addition to the expertise required during each stage of a bathroom remodel, it can also be a costly and time-consuming job.

As we wrote in “Tips for your perfect Portland bathroom remodel,” perhaps you might consider a modest — rather than wholesale — change to your bathroom.

A little bit can go a long way in this regard. You can update your sink with decorative faucet handles, for example. Or swap out your old shower door for a shiny new one.

If you require a complete bathroom overhaul, then be sure to consult an expert. You’ll need to chat with plumbers, carpenters, and electricians at the very least.

Of course, you’ll probably spend a lot of time speaking to employees at your local home improvement store. And if the project is truly enormous, you might even need to check in with a general contractor.

Long story short: Knowing how to remodel a bathroom is an extensive and intensive process.

Truth is: Unless you’ve done this type of work successfully in the past, you’ll probably need to hire a pro. (And if you’ve done this work in the past, you’re most likely not even reading this blog post!)
